Roy's Redwoods Preserve

293 forested acres overlooking the heart of San Geronimo Valley.

Rangers Recommend

  • Primeval groves of bay and redwood trees are the star attractions here.
  • Bay trees and towering redwoods run along picturesque Meadow Trail, where scenes in George Lucas' The Ewok Adventure were filmed.
  • Climb the Dickson Ridge Fire Road for sweeping views from Mount Tamalpais to Mount Wittenberg.
  • For a peaceful getaway, meander down Roy’s Redwoods Loop Trail. It's a secluded ridge with sheltering fir, madrone, and oak trees.
  • Look for "hippie trees." A 60's commune made their homes inside large hollowed-out trunks.
  • Travel on to Maurice Thorner Memorial Preserve via connecting Thorner Ridge Trail.
  • Dogs welcome–must be leashed on trail, and under voice command on fire roads, with leash readily available.

Naturalist Notes

  • Look for pileated woodpeckers and back-throated gray warblers during the day. Listen for barn owls and great–horned owls in evening and early morning.
  • Pacific hound's tongue, milkmaids, and other wildflowers bloom in spring.
  • Kingsnakes, racers, ring-necked snakes, and rattlesnakes make their home here, as does every species of lizard in the county.
  • Check out the iNaturalist field guide. Add your own observations.
