Alto Bowl Preserve

A hilltop greenbelt nestled between Mill Valley and Corte Madera.

Rangers Recommend

  • The sight of horses grazing on adjacent Horse Hill has been a beloved local landmark for decades.
  • Do a short out and back, or go for miles. 37-acre Alto Bowl connects Camino Alto and Horse Hill preserves. You can also continue on to Blithedale Summit and other public lands.
  • At the hilltop on a clear day you can see views of Tiburon Ridge and the San Francisco skyline.
  • Dogs welcome and must be leashed on trail, and under voice command on fire roads, with leash readily available.

Naturalist Notes

  • American kestrels, red-tailed hawks, and northern harriers are nearly always overhead, hunting for rodents and reptiles on the hillsides.
  • In spring, look for wildflowers, such as hound's tongue, California poppy, blue-eyed grass, iris, and lupine.
  • You may spot fox, raccoon, or deer. Coyote and bobcat are also in residence, but rarely seen.
