Terra Linda Sleepy Hollow DetailThis large preserve (1,104) protects the ridges that surround several small communities in northern San Rafael. The area supports a mixture of open grassland and broadleaf forests crisscrossed with fire roads and trails. Although there are no easily defined loop hike options, there are long stretches of fire roads along the exposed ridges offering many day hike possibilities. The Springs Hill area (north of Terra Linda) has a scattering of exposed serpentine outcrops that support a variety of unusual plants. Where woodland edges meet open grasslands, watch for cavity nesting birds such as western bluebirds, tree swallows, and ash-throated flycatchers.

The clearings along the fire road on this ridge are great places for butterflies, but keep your eyes scanning the sky: Golden Eagles are seen here all year.
