Marin County Parks and Open Space Department

Maurice Thorner Memorial DetailThis small preserve hosts a single trail that carries hikers to the top of a low ridge above the San Geronimo Valley. Although only 33 acres in size, there is a surprising diversity of trees and wildflowers here, and the hilltop is a favorite place to watch butterflies in late spring and summer. At the east end of the preserve, the Thorner Ridge Trail now connects to the bridge that crosses Nicasio Valley Road and allows access to adjacent Roy’s Redwoods Preserve. Visitors who want to take a longer loop hike can also use this trail to connect to nearby French Ranch Preserve, but this route requires a brief walk on the Lagunitas School Road.

Directions:

From Hwy 101 in Larkspur, take the Sir Francis Drake Blvd exit west past Fairfax and turn right at Lagunitas School Rd. MCOSD gate is on the left near the school parking lot.

Visit walkbikemarin.org, transitandtrails.org, 511.org, or dial 511 to find out about alternative transportation and public transit options from your location.

Open Space Field Guide

A small preserve, but a great place for butterfly and bird watching. No matter when you visit you’ll hear the raucous chatter of the colony of Acorn Woodpeckers that live here.
